Skin signs of Internal Disease: do NOT confuse Peutz Jeghers and Carney Syndromes

Carney syndrome in a patient previously considered to have Peutz-Jeghers syndrome.

  • Some skin conditions ar associated with internal diseases.
  • Some of these conditions can be syndromic and the existence of skin signs is associated with internal conditions
  • Peutz-Jegher’s Syndrome is characterized by brown or black spots on the lips and inside the mouth.
  • It is associated with hamartomatous polyps in the gut a small percentage of these patients have associated cancer of the gut, breasts or ovaries.
  • However, other syndromes such as Carney’s Syndrome can present similarly on the skin, however gut problems are not the main associated problem and this case report shows how the two can easily be mixed up.
