Onychomycosis is a frequent condition and recurrences are quite frequent. Amorolfine is a nail lacquer used to treat it and the authors ran a single-centre prospective, randomized open label case control study. 26 patients were included in each group, one receiving amorolfine nail lacquer once every two weeks compared with an untreated control group.

After 3 years of follow-up, statistically significant differences were seen after one year (8.3% of recurrence in the treated group vs 31.8% in the untreated group). The treated was well tolerated which can be explained by a spaced out local treatment.

However after three years, there was no difference in the recurrence rate that was statistically significant between the treated and untreated group.

Study funded by Galderma of which two investigators are employed.
