Treatment of Solar Lentigines in Caucasians (For Professionals)

About lentigo solaris (solar lentigo, lentigines):

  • Occurs in sun exposed areas typically in individuals aged 50 and over
  • Histologically, pigmentation is located in the epidermis, in the basal layer.  (Stratum basale)
  • It is caused by an increased number of melanocytes who have a normal amount of melanin

Treatment options include:

  • cryotherapy
  • chemical peels

Solar lentigines need to be distinguished from solar hyperpigmentation :

  • It occurs in light skinned individuals
  • It is most common after 50 years old
  • It is difficult to treat
