Hyperpigmentary Disorders in Caucasians (For Professionals)

The following conditions can be found in the Caucasian population (non-exhaustive list):

  • Freckles (Ephelides):
  1. increased amount of melanin with normal number of melanocytes
  • lentigenes (solar lentigo):
  1. appear after 50 years old.
  2. Histologically: epidermal pigmentation located mainly in the basal layer
  3. Caused by an increase number of melanocytes (containing a normal amount of melanin)
  • Solar hyperpigmentation:
  1. It occurs in light skinned individuals
  2. It is most common after 50 years old
  3. It is difficult to treat
